How to Balance Your Career and Your Relationship

Balancing your career and your relationship is no easy task. You likely have numerous on-the-job responsibilities that are pulling you in many different directions, and it's hard to also find the time to devote your attention, focus, and energy to your relationship. Fortunately, there are five steps you can take right now that'll help you find success in both of these important aspects of your life.

1. Be Honest With Your Partner About the Requirements of Your Job

When it comes to finding the appropriate balance between your career and your relationship, the first step is to tell your partner from the start about the necessary commitments of your job. Many careers can require you to work long hours, take on night shifts, and even be on-call at all hours of the day, and it's important that your partner understands the demands of your job right off the bat so that there are no hurt feelings, miscommunications, or misunderstandings between the two of you. If you suddenly have to leave a party, event, or special occasion because you're needed at work, your partner needs to be okay with this concept from the outset of your relationship.

2. Don't Be Afraid to Delegate

Another key way to find balance between your career and your relationship is to not be afraid to delegate your on-the-job responsibilities and say, "no." While you may love your career, want to take on all projects, and feel as though you need to be involved in every single decision, it's important not only for the health of your relationship but for your own physical and emotional health that you don't overwork or overextend yourself to the point of burnout.

Being able to take time to enjoy the other aspects of your life, especially your love life, is vital to your overall health and well-being. Don't let your job run (and eventually ruin) your life.

3. Make Your Relationship a Real Priority

Many people find it difficult to balance their career and their relationship because they don't put in the effort to make their relationship a priority.

However, in order to maintain a strong, happy, and healthy relationship with your partner, it's important to view your relationship as something that needs your full time, attention, and focus. This means that keeping commitments to your partner, whether it's meeting him or her for dinner at a certain time or spending an entire weekend with him or her, has to be just as important—if not more so—than any type of work commitment. If you give your word to your significant other, it's truly significant that you keep it if you want to keep your relationship.

4. Put Away the Distractions When You're With Your Partner

If you're trying to find the right balance between your career and your relationship, another important step is to make the most of the time that you get to spend with your partner. And that means rather than staring at your phone, responding to work emails, and texting your friends, you should place an emphasis on being fully present when you're with one another. That way, the time you spend together is truly meaningful, as opposed to you being disconnected and distracted from each other even when you're with one another. While it may seem unnatural or uncomfortable, putting your phone away and focusing completely on your partner is one of the best ways to find real balance between your work life and your love life.

5. Leave the Office at the Office

While finding the appropriate balance between your work and your relationship can be challenging, an additional tip is to leave whatever transpired at work behind you at work. Rather than complaining to your partner about your coworkers, explaining the intricacies of a certain work project, or telling your partner just how much smarter you are than your boss, you should make sure that your time with your partner isn't merely an opportunity for you to vent or brag about work. While it's important that you're open and honest with your partner and aren't afraid to talk about your day or how you're feeling, this becomes a real issue when every single conversation revolves around your work. And if you're finding that you're always in a bad mood when you're with your partner because of what happened at the office, this may mean that you need to find a new job—before your partner finds a new relationship.
